Dustin von Holten, the founder of DVH NP IN PSYCHIATRY SERVICES, PLLC, is a highly qualified and experienced psychiatric nurse practitioner and psychotherapist offering personalized, data-informed psychiatric care rooted in evidence-based therapeutic approaches.

He is highly educated, holding two bachelor degrees—one in General Health Sciences from Purdue University, Indiana, and a second in Nursing from Columbia University, New York. These two degrees gave Dustin a thorough foundational base for his postgraduate studies, where he specialized in mental health.

Dustin went on to gain a master’s degree on Columbia University’s Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program. This comprehensive two-year course prepared Dustin for his career in assessing and treating mentally ill patients. It covered theory and supervised clinical practice for working with individuals, families, and groups in need. Dustin acquired the skills needed to address the intricate and varied requirements of a growing and changing society comprising children, teenagers, adults, and seniors. The course covered acute, long-term, and community-based care and various types of treatment including emergency support, managing medications, psychotherapy, education, and referrals.

Upon qualification, Dustin took his first psychiatry job at New York’s JCCA, which delivers child welfare and mental health services to New York’s neediest and most vulnerable children. Dustin delivered specialized psychiatric care to children and young people aged between five and 26 in an outpatient foster care setting. One year later, he took on a simultaneous role at Downtown Psychiatric Group. For the next four-plus years, he provided comprehensive mental health care to adult patients at Downtown Psychiatric Group alongside his work at JCCA. His many responsibilities included assessing, diagnosing, planning treatment, and managing medication to Adult patients.

In July 2023, Dustin launched his own psychiatry practice offering online psychiatry services to patients located in California, Washington, Utah, Alaska, New York, New Jersey, or Maine. He treats patients experiencing general mental health issues, anxiety and panic disorders, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He also offers psychotherapy with psychiatric medication management services for various conditions.

Psychotherapy is a branch of psychology where mental health conditions and emotional issues are treated through talking therapy only. Psychotherapists talk through a patient’s issues and attempt to tackle problematic behaviors, feelings, and thoughts by uncovering their subconscious meanings. A number of conditions can be treated effectively with psychotherapy, but others require medical intervention or more complex treatments.

Psychiatry, on the other hand, is a branch of medicine with a wider scope than psychotherapy alone. While it may also involve talking therapy, psychiatry entails a wider range of treatment options such as medications, psychosocial interventions (e.g. cognitive behavioral therapy) and interventional treatments (e.g., referrals for electroconvulsive therapy).

DVH NP IN PSYCHIATRY SERVICES, PLLC makes it easy to get top quality psychiatric care from the privacy of your home.

Navigating Your Psychiatry Journey: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Initiate with GAD-7 and PHQ-9 Assessment: Embark on your journey by completing the GAD-7 and PHQ-9 assessments. Your responses will equip your provider with essential insights to comprehensively evaluate your mental health landscape.
  2. Forge a Connection with a Psychiatric Provider: Get paired with a proficient psychiatric provider for an in-depth video consultation. Engage in a dialogue about your feelings, thereby collaboratively determining the optimal course forward. Typically, these exchanges span around 15 minutes, dedicated to understanding your scenario, elucidating your care plan, and addressing any inquiries you might harbor. Alternatively, you may schedule a 45-minute comprehensive psychiatric evaluation.
  3. Adhere to Your Care Plan: Should your provider opt to prescribe, your medication will be dispatched to your local pharmacy. Your care regimen also encapsulates therapy and a suite of self-care utilities, enabling a self-paced journey towards wellness.
  4. Track Your Progress: We advocate a communicative approach, urging you to share updates on your symptoms and any side effects on a weekly basis. This continuous feedback loop allows your provider to adeptly monitor your progress, tweaking your care plan as necessary to ensure optimal outcomes on your road to betterment.

Your initial psychiatric evaluation will take approximately 45 minutes.

Follow-up psychiatric medication management appointments often range from 15 to 30 minutes.

Sessions in combined psychiatric medication management and psychotherapy are offered in durations of 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and 60 minutes.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Humans are unique beings; each individual is vastly different from the next, from their mental health condition and ability to manage everyday situations, to the way they respond to treatment and medication. Some patients will notice a vast improvement after six or eight sessions; others will need ongoing therapy in order to help them cope with life’s stresses and strains.

Once you have carried out your initial psychiatric evaluation, it may be possible to make rough estimations as to the nature and length of your psychiatric treatment plan, although this is by no means guaranteed.

The intricate nature of anxiety and depression necessitates a nuanced and ongoing approach to care. At DVH NP IN PSYCHIATRY SERVICES, PLLC, we value the essence of continuous communication to ascertain the efficacy of your treatment plan. We encourage periodic check-ins, offering you an avenue to share your progress and current state of being.

These shared reflections not only serve as a beacon to track your journey over time but also provide invaluable insight for your doctor. Your proactive engagement enables your healthcare provider to meticulously monitor your care, making requisite adjustments to ensure the treatment aligns with your evolving needs, ultimately propelling you towards the best possible therapeutic outcome. Through this collaborative effort, we strive to tailor a care plan that resonates with your unique path towards alleviating anxiety and depression, fostering a supportive environment for your mental wellness journey.

In a psychiatric medication session, your psychiatric nurse practitioner will talk with you to determine whether your current medication is doing the intended job. They’ll assess your mental state, ask you about symptoms and side effects, and discuss with you whether you feel the medication is working. Using this information, they’ll make a decision on whether to keep your medication the same, remove you from it, change doses, switch to another drug, or add new medication.

Regular psychiatric medication management sessions are extremely important, given that mental health conditions can change with time. Your medication may no longer be effective, or it could be causing new side effects that mean it’s inadvisable to continue taking it. Some medications are unsuitable for use in the long-term, meaning your practitioner will need to discuss alternatives with you.

At DVH NP IN PSYCHIATRY SERVICES, PLLC, we do not prescribe any controlled substances, which encompasses a range of psychiatric medications regulated under this category. Our adherence to telemedicine best practices and healthcare regulations ensures we focus on treatments that are optimally managed via remote care. Below is a detailed list of controlled psychiatric medications that WE DO NOT PRESCRIBE:

No. DVH NP IN PSYCHIATRY SERVICES, PLLC is currently only offering 100% remote healthcare services to patients located in California, Washington, Utah, Alaska, New York, New Jersey, or Maine, via telehealth sessions.

DVH NP IN PSYCHIATRY SERVICES, PLLC is always happy to offer a free 15-minute video consultation to all new patients. The idea of this session is to create an initial contact between patient and practitioner, have a quick chat, and get a feel for one another. The provider will let you know if he thinks he can be of help to you, and you can decide whether he feels like a good fit.

The free 15-minute consultation is completely obligation-free—there’ll be absolutely no pressure to embark on treatment with DVH NP IN PSYCHIATRY SERVICES, PLLC after the call.

The initial psychiatric evaluation, usually lasting around 45 minutes, is a comprehensive mental health assessment carried out by a psychiatric nurse practitioner. In it, the provider seeks to understand your state of mental health and draw up a plan as to how best to proceed with treatment.

Your practitioner will look at your past medical and mental history and inquire about any medicines you are currently taking. He will also seek information about your family members to ascertain whether there’s any history of mental illness in your family. If you have any history of victimization, for example child abuse or domestic abuse, this will also be noted. Other areas for discussion during this initial assessment may be your social situation, your physical health, any physical symptoms, and relationships with the people around you.

Depending on the complexity of the issues that arise, it may be necessary to speak to other individuals in order to gather necessary information for treatment. Additional sessions may be set up with family members, friends, colleagues, or healthcare professionals—or, where possible, be incorporated into the initial evaluation.

Unfortunately there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Depending on how complex your mental health issues are, it could take any amount of time to feel an improvement.

In terms of mental health medications, again, this varies depending on the drug. With some, you may feel improvements within a matter of hours or days, while with others it may take several weeks for the positive effects to kick in.

However, many patients feel that once they begin addressing their mental health issues, they experience an uplift in their general outlook, since they feel a sense of reassurance that their condition is finally in the hands of a mental health professional.
